Freedom

I’m in this course called Freedom: Philosophy, History, and Law. That in combination with my nacent experience as a liberated college kid have made me rather thoughtful. For example, I was recently informed of a website which offered a downloadable version of a program called “Freedom”.

Really now? You can download Freedom? Tell me more.

This program disables the internet.

For any specified amount of time (up to 8 hours) this “simple productivity application” blocks you from going online, and thus losing valuable time to social networking sites, blogs, porn, whatever distractions you may face when given a computer and wifi.

The program seems like a great product. I may be in need of it myself, seeing as I have three reading assignments, a Calculus packet, and an Econ quiz scheduled tomorrow and I’m very obviously on Tumblr.

But really now. Is the internet not the epitome of Freedom? Is this program, which takes away your ability to surf the world wide web at your leisure, true Freedom? Without the Freedom to waste an entire day online, being forced to turn one’s reflections inward upon one’s self and what is directly relevant to one’s life, is that Freedom? What does Freedom even mean?

I don’t know, but I’ll let you know what Bob says when I go back to his class tomorrow.

My first experience with a Care Package

So I’ve been at college now for one week and one day. I think I’ve had all of my stereotypical first-time collegiate experiences now (more on that later), especially with just having received a Care Package from my mom. I’m going to call her and thank her and eventually end up crying at her because I miss home, but right now I wanted to make a list of everything that was in this bag that my family thought important enough to send. The tears started earlier than I planned, but here goes-

(in order of retrieval from Central Market bag)

  • elephant clock
  • new glasses (yeee!)
  • Clear Screen Protectors for my phone because Larry “didn’t know how she gunked up her phone so much already”
  • wall ornament letter “E”- so that I may compete with my roommate’s comparatively overdecorated side of the room. See also, elephant clock
  • pair of aviators
  • my absolute favorite pair of sunglasses that I thought they couldn’t find
  • hair waver (I requested they send my straightener, but close enough)
  • an old letter from Melanie Bruning that I swear they found and included just because they knew it would make me miss her.
  • iHome
  • umbrella
  • panty hoes
  • razors
  • tailored trouses for my business endeavors
  • three books (Love’s Aspects, Jack and Jill, The World in 1000 pictures)

I love you all and miss you all and wish I could see you <3 Have a lovely week!
